Access to Information and Protection of Privacy

Holy Spirit School Division is governed by two provincial privacy laws:

  • Access to Information Act (ATIA) -The Access to Information Act (ATIA) ensures transparency and accountability within our school division. It grants public access to division records while protecting the confidential information necessary for the safe and effective operation of our schools. 
  • Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) - The Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) governs how our school division collects, uses, and protects personal information to ensure student and staff privacy. The Act also permits the responsible use of non-personal data under limited circumstances to support school planning and educational improvements.

What is the privacy management program?

Under Alberta’s Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), Holy Spirit Catholic School Division is required to maintain a documented Privacy Management Program (PMP). This program serves as our formal framework, bringing together the administrative procedures and safeguards necessary to securely manage and protect the personal information entrusted to our schools. 

Why does this matter?

The PMP ensures student information is handled responsibly, transparently, and securely. It also outlines your privacy rights and provides details on how to contact us with questions or requests. 

Your Privacy Rights and Assurances

  • Access & Correction: You have the right to request access to your personal information and ask us to correct any inaccuracies.
  • Breach Notification: If a privacy breach occurs that poses a real risk of significant harm, we will promptly notify you, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) of Alberta, and the Minister of Technology and Innovation.
  • Independent Review: If you are not satisfied with our response to a privacy or access matter, you may request an independent review by the OIPC.
